Quick answer
If something has gone wrong, do not read this page from top to bottom.
Jump to the problem.
Emergency numbers
- Tourist Police: 1155
- Police: 191
- Ambulance / medical emergency: 1669 (or call 191 and ask for an ambulance)
- Fire: 199
For a serious incident, contact your travel insurer as soon as you reasonably can too.
Lost passport
Do this first
- Confirm it is actually missing.
- Check the hotel safe, reception, recent taxi/Grab and anywhere you showed ID.
- If stolen, report the theft to local police.
- Cancel/report the passport through the UK passport process.
- If you need to travel urgently, check eligibility for a UK Emergency Travel Document.
- Contact your airline if a flight is imminent.
A missing passport can also affect your ability to collect money transfers, check into some accommodation or complete onward travel.
Warning
British travellers
The British Embassy in Bangkok can provide consular support in appropriate cases, but the embassy does not replace local police, your insurer or the passport/ETD process.
Lost phone
Your priorities are:
- Try to locate it using your device account.
- Lock the device remotely.
- Secure your email first if the phone gives access to it.
- Secure banking and payment apps.
- Contact your mobile provider/eSIM provider.
- Change important passwords if you think the phone is compromised.
- Report theft where appropriate.
Why email matters
Your email often becomes the reset route for everything else.
A thief with an unlocked phone plus access to email can create a much bigger problem than the value of the handset.
Lost bank card
We have a full separate guide because this problem deserves step-by-step instructions.
In short
- freeze the card
- check transactions
- use a separately stored backup card
- keep access to mobile banking
- arrange emergency cash if needed
- report the card permanently lost/stolen if appropriate

No cash and no working card
Warning
Possible routes include:
- backup card
- transferring money between your own accounts
- money transfer for cash pickup
- trusted family/friend sending money
- your bank's emergency support options (ask whether it offers an emergency cash facility)
Your passport/ID may be needed for cash collection.
The British Embassy will not normally give you cash. UK government guidance says that only in very exceptional circumstances can the Foreign Office help with an emergency loan to get you home, or let family deposit money with it when no other transfer service is available.
This is why a backup card stored separately matters.
Missed flight
First work out whether:
- the flight has actually departed
- the airline has already rebooked you
- your ticket includes any missed-connection protection
- the cause was an airline connection or you arriving late independently
If it was a protected connection
Go straight to the airline transfer/service desk.
If you simply arrived late
Contact the airline before buying another ticket. Depending on the fare, they may have options that are cheaper than starting again.
If your hotel/transport caused the issue, keep receipts and evidence for any insurance claim.
Been scammed
If money is still being requested, stop paying while you work out what is happening.
Preserve:
- screenshots
- receipts
- chat messages
- names/numbers
- booking pages
- location
- bank transaction information
For immediate tourist-police help, call 1155.
Thailand's Tourist Police also run a portal for checking providers and reporting scams, including suspicious websites.
If a card payment is involved, contact your bank promptly.
Taxi dispute
Warning
If you feel unsafe:
- get to a public place
- note vehicle details if possible
- use 1155 for Tourist Police
- preserve app booking information/screenshot
Tourist Police have taken enforcement action against taxi-meter refusal and passenger refusal in Bangkok, so reporting channels do exist.
Scooter or rental damage dispute
Warning
Before renting, photograph the vehicle thoroughly.
If there is a serious dispute:
- keep evidence
- contact insurer
- contact Tourist Police if appropriate
- do not sign documents you do not understand
Need medical help
For an urgent medical emergency in Thailand call 1669.
UK travel advice recommends appropriate travel insurance and contacting your insurer/medical-assistance company quickly when referred for treatment.
If you can safely do so, keep:
- passport/ID
- insurance policy details
- medication list
- emergency contact
- payment method
Warning
Drink spiking or suspected methanol poisoning
If you or somebody with you becomes unexpectedly confused, extremely unwell or far more intoxicated than expected:
- get to a safe place
- tell trusted people/venue staff
- seek urgent medical attention
- do not leave the person alone
UK travel advice specifically warns about drink spiking and methanol poisoning in Thailand.
Lost luggage
Before leaving the airport baggage area:
- find the airline/baggage desk
- create a missing-bag report
- keep the reference number
- keep baggage tags
- photograph paperwork
Then check your travel-insurance rules before buying replacement items.
The emergency setup to create before travelling
Save offline:
- passport copy
- insurance details
- bank support details
- hotel address
- emergency contact
- airline booking
- card-provider information
Keep:
- two separate cards
- emergency cash
- UK number access
- power bank
A boring 15-minute setup at home can save hours of panic abroad.
